A B C D want to get across a lake 312 miles across.
Swimming speeds in mph: A=4  B=8  C=12  D=16
They have a motorboat that goes at 48mph.
But this boat can only take 2 persons.
D leaves first; 2 hours later the other 3 leave.
During the last hour, a whale decides to push the boat;
causes the boat to go 72mph during the last hour.
All 4 arrive on other side at same time, 16 hours after D left.
You need to find:
1- how many miles did the boat travel?
2- for how many hours did A swim?
3- how many miles did C swim?
4- how many hours was B in the boat?

NOTE: 
everything is in complete miles and hours (no fractions of nothing),
all speeds are constant, no interfering currents, no lost of time
getting in/out of boat, no loss of time doing boat u-turns,
no hanging on to the back of the boat or other such dishonest stuff; 

in other words, no dirty tricks to make your life miserable.

I'll name it "hide and/or remit".
6 guys can each carry a maximum of a 10 day ration-supply; 
they are on the edge of a desert; so they could all walk 
together straight out into the desert for 5 days, then 
return home. That's clear! But not much fun...

Well, in order to make this puzzle possible, they decide 
on a plan of action to send one of them as far as possible 
straight out into the desert, such that this "chosen one" 
can then return home, naturally!

Their plan uses 2 strategies:
1- hiding spots for supplies
2- guys giving supplies to other guys

And to make your life easier, the hiding and/or remitting
of supplies is always at day's end, and in "packets" of
one-day-rations.

Their plan is also such that in total, the least possible
packets have been hidden. A packet weighs 7 pounds.

Finally, the guys walk at same speed: 23 miles per day.

How many miles was the "chosen" one able to go into the
desert, and how many "pounds" were hidden?

Note 1: everybody leaves together.
Note 2: ALL 60 packets consumed while walking.
Note 3: everything is integral.



Answer: 
The trick is to send guys back home as soon as possible, keeping
their packet consumption to a minimum, so having more packets
left to send the chosen one as far as possible.
Call the guys A B C D E F; A the chosen one, F returning first,
then E, and so on.
At end of 1st day, F hides 5 (just enough for the 5 other guys 

to use on their return trip), gives 3 (one each to A B C), 
and returns the next day using his 10th packet.
E will similarly dispose of his supplies on day2, hiding 4,
having one left to return to 1st hiding spot, where he picks
one up for his final trip back home.
Note that everyone who returns has one packet left to take
him to the previous hiding spot; this minimizes the hiding.
D does similar to E on day3, hiding 3, then returning.
On day 4, C hides 3, as he has supplies he cannot dispose of;
on day5, C hides 2, and has 1 left to return.
Carry on with this and you'll end up with A having 1 packet
left at end of day 12, so returns using this packet to 
hiding spot 11, then gradually home picking up the one packet
left at each other hiding spots.
This is minimum to be hidden:
Day: 1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9  10  11  12
Hid: 5  4  3  3  2  2  1  1  1   1   1   0  =  24
At 7 pounds per packet, that's 168 hidden pounds.

If you wanna see this clearly, make yourself a diagram;
at the end of day 7, B will hide one, replenish A to 10,
then return; A will then hide 1 at days 8 to 11.
At 23 miles per day, A walked 276 miles into the desert.

Answer is 10 days (230 miles), 24 (168 pounds) hidden.
Works same as the other one; here's the hiding story:
Day:  1   2   3   4   5   6   7   8   9   10
Hid:  6   5   4   3   2   1   1   1   1    0  =  24

Why is there 6 hidden on day1 ? 
2 guys are able to return, so they leave 6 for 
the other 6 guys; again: make yourself a diagram;
it'll all show clearly...
